PAMELA GLADDING IS OFF TO TUSCANY!!!

Pamela is packing her brushes and paints for a trip to Tuscany where she will be decorating a harpsichord. (Definition - A harpsichord is a stringed instrument that was the precursor of the piano.)

Pamela says: "The decoration that I will be doing will be inspired by an instrument in the permanent collection of musical instruments at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. It was built by Johannes Couchet about 1650 and the decoration is of that century. Flowers and acanthus leaves intertwine and float on 23K gold leaf on the side of the case. Just my cup of tea! It is probably the one instrument that will use all my years of painting expertise. A grand statement for a grand age.

"Pamela's entree into the world of design and decoration after college was in decorating harpsichords for various new "builders" of these antique instruments in the traditions of the past for the modern age. These finished instruments found their way into private collections, museums, orchestras and schools. Pamela, of course, expanded her designing and decorating into a multitude of other products including these ecards.

Pamela admits that it will be tough to work in the beautiful and distracting surroundings of the Tuscan countryside...so stay tuned as we report on her adventures abroad.We are sharing some of the beautiful sights of Pamela's trip to Tuscany... Her photos are a mix of Florence and some of the beautiful cities in the near by area. Pamela was busy painting a beautiful harpsichord for a friend in Tuscany. She certainly appears to have had a wonderful trip.

June Birth Flower

The rose is the June birthflower. Rose is known as the flower of passion as the ancient Greeks believed that Aphrodite the goddess of love gave a rose to Eros the god of love. Roses have many flower meanings according to their color and number of roses in a bouquet. All roses symbolize love and appreciation though.

No other flower is a recognizable as the rose. No other flower conveys love and passion like the rose either. In Victorian times each flower had its own secret meaning. Red roses meant you love the receiver. Pink roses mean you have not the passion of red, but still have feelings of love. Dark pink roses mean you have gratitude. Light pink roses mean admiration or sympathy. White roses mean innocence, purity, secrecy and friendship. Yellow roses mean dying love or platonic love. In German speaking countries though yellow roses mean jealousy and infidelity. Yellow roses with red tips mean friendship or falling in love. Burgandy roses mean beauty. Blue roses mean mystery. Green roses mean calm. Purple roses mean protection and maternal or paternal love.

Tulips Are My Favorite Flower For Mother's Day

Tulip Setup

Tulips have to be my favorite flower, if it is even possible to pick only one! They are so curvaceous and so baroque when they are finally opened to the point of the petals falling off of the stem. I have always been inspired by the Dutch floral painters of the 17th and 18th centuries, and fascinated by the "Tulip mania" that took place at that time. Imagine one tulip bulb more expensive than a house at that time!

I like planting tulips with two varieties that are close in color range; for example: a pink next to a deep magenta. The one color plays off against the other and makes the color "dance" when viewed at a distance. Another nice combination are a striped variety with a solid. In my garden they usually forget-me-knots at their feet. The small blue and pink flowerettes are a nice compliment to the grand stately tulip. I plant a variety of species so that I can extend the blooming (and viewing and painting!) time as long as possible. I'm going to go and collect some now!

The daffodils are in full bloom in my garden here in Pennsylvania. The bright yellow color is so welcoming. I love to pick a bouquet of daffies and bring them into the house. It's a sign that the garden season has really started! I took the vase into my studio and enjoyed drawing them and adding the color - yellows, greens and creams.

They are blooming at the same time as the grape hyacinths, primroses, forget-me-knots, and early tulips. The combination of the classic blue and yellow is stunning in the garden, especially when planted "en masse". Many of these different daffodil varieties were gifts from other gardeners. It is a nice reminder of them. It is always fun to share plants."

Doll Barnes

Doll Barnes began creating her paper sculpture designs after being introduced to the medium as a student in 2000. She found the medium to be a perfect marriage betwen art and craft. Each piece is created out of heavy weight art paper using various shaping techniques. Foam core spacers are used for added dimension.
A step-by-step demonstration showing how one of her pieces was created was filmed by HGTV - Home and Garden Television - and will be shown in and upcoming episode of their show, "Thats Clever!"

Two of her pieces were shown at the Society of Illustrators in New York City as well as "ICON3", the Illustrators Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Doll lives in Wallingford, Connecticut surrounded by her menagerie of paper sculpture friends who are slowly, quietly taking over the house!Doll joined us to become one of our "Friends of Pamela" artists and has provided us with the pleasure of creating ecards from her exclusive line of paper sculptures. Her designs give new meaning to the word "whimsy". With animation and music added to her collection of paper scultures, you now can send both her paper sculptures and electronic greeting cards (ecards) to your friends and family.

"I am a third generation artist. My grandfather was an illustrator and window display artist for Macy's dept. store in NYC in the 1930's. After my mother received her BFA in 1952, she also headed for NYC and was a graphic artist and illustrator for Field and Beatty, a New York graphic art company. As a child, books filled with color plates of the most famous artists surrounded me in the world. Thanks to my mom's influence I knew who Mondrian and Picasso were before I entered grade school. Of course, drawing and painting were my favorite subjects and I knew from early on that I would pursue a career in Art. Shortly after graduating from Kutztown University with a BFA, I started painting and decorating antique trays for Nininger and Co. of Waterbury, CT. These works are reproduction paintings from the various schools popular in the late 1700's - mid - 1800's. Each painting is surrounded by very intricate and ornate gold leaf borders. Many of them are on display in the Design and Decoration Building in NYC. I've painted several hundred trays over the last nineteen years, as well as painting and drawing for sheer pleasure."

Fun Christmas Cat Ecard from Artist Louise Max

Pamela asked Louise Max to tell us how she got started with her wonderful dog and cat images.

Louise replied: "In 1997, I had taken out an advertisement page in a national directory of illustration, which showcased a few pieces of my art. The directory is used by art directors and publishers who are seeking specific art images for specific projects. I was quite pleased to be contacted by the editor at Gibbs Smith Publishing. They wanted me to illustrate two books written by Mr. Ray Bradbury, who is quite renowned for his science fiction stories. The interesting part was that Mr. Bradbury loves animals and had written two short prose pieces, one about dogs ("Dogs Think Every Day is Christmas") and one about cats ("With Cat for Comforter").

"Hope Your Holiday Is Swinging"

"I was very honored to work closely with Mr. Bradbury, who proved to be very easy going and helpful. Originally we were going to create a more standard and traditional look for these books. I was not quite satisfied with the images, and in thinking about the nature of dogs, I realized that dogs have much in common with two year old children! They are rambunctious, enthusiastic, and joyful. So I submitted some new sketches reflecting these qualities, and Ray loved them.

He commented that I have "an unusual mind" - which, coming from a great science fiction author, I considered to be a great compliment. (and possibly a little scary!) "Both books were published, and Ray signed two copies for me. It was a wonderful experience, and since then my whimsical dog and cat images have appeared on greeting cards, T shirts and a published journal."

Ellen's reply: “I've always been fascinated by any animal that is really small and mice are just plain cute. It's fun to take a small animal and place it in fun situations within the relatively giant-size human world.”

Peace On Earth Ecard

Ellen’s artwork has been a favorite for our animated ecards. “Of all the animals Ellen has drawn … the mice continue to be by far the most popular….”Ellen has always been fascinated by animals and her love of mice began long ago when her sister brought a domesticated mouse home from school. The little creature was soft, warm, gentle and enjoyed being held. It was love at first sight and the start of a lifelong interest that would lead to House-Mouse Designs.

Ellen Jareckie continues to dream up new mouse and bunny antics while working out of her home in Shelburne, Vermont. These are our ecard creations for House-Mouse. Celebrating Joy: A Glimpse into Cindy Hendrick’s “Thanksgiving Feast”

Pamela Gladding recently interviewed Cindy Hendrick regarding the inspiration for her Thanksgiving Feast greeting ecard she so wonderfully created for our collection of ecards.

Pamela: What was your motivation for this image?

Cindy: Thanksgiving dinner is all about family gatherings. I imagined what everybody in this rabbit family in their rabbit hole in Woodfield would be doing around the Thanksgiving table.

Pamela: What's going on around the table?

Cindy: Father is at one end, carving the roasted carrot, and mother is at the other end. The little girl rabbit seated next to Father, the one with the bow in her hair is talking to her Aunt. The boys – and you may have to have boys to understand – are fighting and crawling around under the table. The little baby rabbit is dropping things on the floor. Across the table, Grandmother and Grandfather are seated with another aunt and Great Uncle Silas, who is dozing.

Celebrating Joy: A Glimpse into Cindy Hendrick’s “Thanksgiving Feast

A first glance at the scene in Cindy Hendrick’s popular ecard “Thanksgiving Feast” reveals a charming scene: a generation of rabbits is gathered around a table for a winter feast beneath boughs of pine laden with red berries. The members of the gathering range from a baby rabbit—who does what babies at dinners do best, dropping a bowl onto the floor from his or her highchair—to an elderly rabbit, who is snoozing in his seat. In between are boy rabbits (whispering together conspiratorially and playing under the table), a girl rabbit with a pink bow tucked between her ears, and several adult rabbits, including the white rabbit at the head of the table carving exactly what one would expect rabbits to eat at a special feast: a spectacularly abundant roasted carrot. The scene exudes warmth and familiarity, tradition and comfort. It is a cozy dinner, there in the rabbit hole, and it provides a visual feast, as well, with motion and earth-tone colors and charm all coming together to create the sense of calm and peace that holiday feasts tends to bring.

Holidays Are For Sharing Love!

There is nothing like a holiday with family and friends. We spend so much time doing our "own thing" that we tend to forget the importance of our family and friends. Holidays remind us of how precious we all are to one another and to our history.

Lets start with the upcoming holidays for OCTOBER 2010 and next month we will share with you November holidays. So read below ...

Leif Erikson Day is a United States observance on October 9.
Leif Erikson led the first Europeans to set foot on North American soil. This date was the day the ship Restauration arrived in New York Harbor at the start of the first organized immigration from Norway to the United States.
Columbus Day is a observance on October 11th honoring Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas in 1492. The holiday is observed in the United States by banks, the post office and most governments and schools, while most businesses remain open.
Thanksgiving in Canada is a three or four day weekend (Friday - Sunday or Monday) It is a celebration of being thankful for what one has and for the bounty of the previous year. Celebrations include spending time with family, large family dinners, and parades. Some celebrate it with a weekend getaway to enjoy the autumn and outdoor activities before the winter. Sweetest Day is said to have been started in the 1920's by Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee. Celebrated October 16th. He wanted to make people who were orphaned and under-privilaged happy and thought that there should be an occasion to make them feel special by giving them candy and gifts. There are other reports that say the day was created by a group of candy makers. Regardless of it's origins, the idea of the day is to take the time to show love to people in need or those who are special to us who we wouldn't normally give special attention to.
National Boss Day is an observance day to show appreciation to a boss, manager, supervisor. Celebrated October 16th. Many times we do not realize the challenges of being the boss, which is why Patricia Bays Haroski, in 1958, decided to register the holiday and designate October 16 in honor of her father's birthday. This is a great day to treat your boss to a special lunch, a gift basket, flowers, or just give them a note of "thanks". National Boss's Day was proclamated in 1962.
United Nations Day is celebrated internationally on October 24th for the purpose of informing the people of the world as to the aims, goals, and achievements of the UN. It commemorates the origin of the United Nations Organization on October 24, 1945 when the UN Charter was ratified by almost all permanent members of the Security Council. UN Day is celebrated in various countries and includes a show of cultural performances and a food fair with food from all over the world
Halloween was introduced to America in the 1840’s by Irish immigrants. Celebrated October 31th
The Jack-o-lantern custom was an important part of Irish folklore.
Jack was said to have trapped the Devil into scaling a tree and catching him up there.
Jack was rejected entry into Heaven since he had tricked the Devil.
The Devil is said to have given Jack a small ember for light and warmth.
This fire was kept alight in a hollowed out turnip.
The Irish settlers in America began to use pumpkins instead of turnips as they were more easily available.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly nationa l tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

The First Labor Day
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.
In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Thanksgiving Day, or Thanksgiving, presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. It did not become a federal holiday until 1941. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God, and is still celebrated as such by most religious families, but it is now considered a secular holiday as well.

Most Americans celebrate by gathering at home with family or friends for a holiday feast. Though the holiday's origins can be traced to harvest festivals which have been celebrated in many cultures since ancient times, the American holiday is tied to the deliverance of the English settlers by Native Americans after the harsh winter at Plymouth, Massachusetts and that event has become the pre-eminent foundation story for English North America.

Fall in New England

Fall is the time of year that we begin to hybernate, especially here in New England. The days are still warm, but the nights are crispt with the new season in the air.

This is the time that we begin to pull ourselves inside in preparation of our winter days ahead. So what do we do during those cold days and nights? We send greetings to our distant cousins and friends. And we do the sending of our greetings right from the warmth of our homes.
